Don Levan : Designing Navigation for Solutions

"Just wait, Gretel, until the moon rises, and then we shall see the crumbs of bread which I have strewn about; they will show us our way home again."
–– Hansel and Gretel (As quoted in Information Architecture for the World Wide Web, by Louis Rosenfeld & Peter Morville)

Where am I? Where can I go? And, what can I do? These are the key questions people have when using your solution. The way you design and implement navigation systems can make the difference between a solution that is easy to learn and efficient to use and one that is overwhelming and confusing.

My tentative structure for the session:
  1. Discuss the principles of navigation design and look at some key patterns.
  2. Examine the ways the principles, expectations, and patterns differ when designing for FileMaker Pro the on the desktop, FileMaker Go on the iPhone, and FileMaker Go on the iPad.
  3. Walk through a redesign of the navigation in one or two existing FileMaker solutions.

For this session to really succeed, I need your help.I am looking for examples of well designed navigation systems and those that could use some work (on FileMaker Pro, FileMaker Go for the iPad, and FileMaker Go for the iPhone). I am looking both for examples of great design and examples of effective implementation. I will share back with the community (on this page) anything new that I learn.
